Rex Makin lecture
25 November 2005Students learn from the master
One of the University's most generous supporters gave his time this week to give a presentation to staff and students from the Faculty of Business and Law.
Professor E Rex Makin, the well known Liverpool lawyer and a leading member of the LJMU Trust, delivered a special presentation in the Moot Room at the John Foster Building as the inaugural guest lecturer for the School of Law.
With great humour, Professor Makin proved himself to be something of a raconteur as he recalled various events and incidents from his 60 year career. He reflected upon the changing structure of the courts since he became an articled clerk in 1945 which have seen the whole system of justice remodelled.
Professor Makin has been at the centre of many headline cases such as the actions resulting from the Heysel and Hillsborough disasters and the Alder Hey tragedy, as well as involvement in the eventful lives of Brian Epstein and the Walton Sextuplets. He is even credited with inventing the term 'Beatlemania' although he claims never to have received any royalties from the creation of the phrase.
In a lively question and answer session after his presentation, Professor Makin revealed that despite his evident success in the law, his father had been instrumental in choosing his profession and he would have taken a different direction. His chosen path would have been journalism and eventual control of a paper as a managing editor. Whilst not managing to make the whole journey to become a media magnate, Professor Makin declared his pride at having become a popular columnist, sharing his views for the past 13 years with readers of his weekly column in the Liverpool Echo.
