Law School scores another first for LJMU
02 December 2009LJMU impressed universities from across the globe when it hosted the UK’s first National Mediation Competition, a prestigious new event for law students.
The two-day event, the first of its kind in the country, was organised by Liverpool John Moores University’s School of Law, with the institution welcoming students from as far afield as the United States.
Taking place at Jury’s Hotel, the competition saw 13 teams testing their mediating skills before highly reputable judges.
The winning team was Chapman University, of Orange County, California. Commenting on their experience, Aaron Goben, Lisa Fiance and Kyndell Paine, said: “We are shocked and excited at being named overall team winners– it is a great surprise for a US team to receive such an accolade and we feel extremely privileged.
“Taking part in the event has been a wonderful experience and we would like to thank the School of Law for inviting us and for having embraced us so warmly – it has truly been an honour.”
LJMU secured Liverpool as the venue for the competition after winning last year’s Westminster Mediation Event.
Senior lecturer Ian Johnson, who jointly organised the competition with
Principal Lecturer Sarah Hardy, commented: “Mediation is playing an increasingly important part in the settlement of disputes before they reach the courts, making skills in this area crucial for the success of future lawyers.
“Liverpool John Moores University is at the forefront of these developments and we were delighted to welcome so many teams from other universities to particpate in the UK's inaugural national competition."
