Master class on making reading fun

Leading children’s author delivers master class for student teachers

Nick Sharratt

Award-winning illustrator and author Nick Sharratt came out from behind his drawing board to talk to around 70 LJMU student teachers about how to capture the imagination of children of all ages.

Nick currently spends half his time illustrating his own books and half illustrating other writer’s stories, including books such as Jacqueline Wilson’s Tracy Beaker, now a series on Children’s BBC. His colourful and engaging style has made him a favourite with all ages and his own books include Don’t put your finger in the Jelly, Nelly and A Cheese and Tomato Spider.

Liz Taylor, a lecturer in Primary Education at LJMU, said: “Engaging children with books early on in their development sets them on a life-long journey of learning and exploration. But in order for this to happen, reading has to be fun not homework. That’s why Nick’s books and illustrations are so good, they make reading a pleasure for both parents and children.”

She continued: “It’s vital that teachers understand how to get children to engage with books and reading. Nick’s masterclass was a fantastic opportunity for our students to learn from one of the country’s leading illustrators and authors about how they can turn children into enthusiastic readers.”

During his visit to IM Marsh, Nick met first and final year student teachers and delivered a master class, followed by a book signing.
