Welcome to Journalism at Liverpool John Moores University.

Undergraduate programmes

Liverpool European Capital of Culture 2008

LJMU journalism offers undergraduate programmes, all relying on the high-quality journalism teaching available within the department. First there is a traditional three-year Journalism degree, then we offer a three-year International Journalism degree that teaches UK journalism placed in an international context, whilst Journalism and Digital Cultures looks to the future of journalism and applies existing skills to the developments brought by digital broadcasting and the WorldWide Web.

These undergraduate courses are highly vocational and aim to equip students for a career in journalism. The first two allow students to carry out their journalism in all the main disciplines - print, radio, television, and online - and go on to specialise in one of them in the third year. Journalism and Digital Cultures concentrates on the key skills of the journalist of writing and reporting and uses the developing digital platforms to present the journalism to an audience.  All the courses mix their vocational approach with strong academic support, providing a solid theoretical background to the courses.

Masters programmes

The department offers a master programme in International Journalism.

LJMU’s masters degree in International Journalism is a radical departure for journalism education in the UK. It is the first course aimed at developing critical analysis of journalism on the international stage for both practitioners and those who have a serious interest in journalism. The International Journalism MA concentrates on journalism with international relations and is suitabl for students from abroad as well as those from the UK.

The programme offers full and part time routes and allows those with no experience to receive basic training in journalism practice whilst those who already have those skills can concentrate on analysing and the craft of journalism and their own part in it. Journalism stands at a crossroads as the technology of the new millennium offers major opportunities and huge threats.

With many newspapers fearful of closure and TV and radio seeking new directions, it is the ideal time for all journalists to re-evaluate their work and reconsider how things will be in the future. This programme allows that reflection and help develop your thinking about the future and how to prepare for it.

MA International Journalism

Journalism at LJMU

The staff at LJMU are are all journalists and share considerable experience of both journalism and teaching. They cover a wide range of professional disciplines including print, radio TV, online, and public relations. Several are leading researchers or authors in their fields and this is reflected in their teaching.

The school has up-to-date newsrooms using industry standard equipment and software for radio.

LJMU believes it is important to limit the number of students on a course to ensure access to staff and resources. Access to staff and equipment is very important in journalism when students are working against tight deadlines. Only 20 students are allowed to join our International Journalism course each year and we limit the numbers on each of the other courses to 40 a year.

Liverpool is a lively city in which to study journalism. A daily and evening paper, a number of weeklies, radio stations, Granada TV, the BBC and countless PR companies and other media outlets gives it a media feel. Of course it is a lively city for any business with a character all of its own and a history and culture that is unmatched outside London.

Liverpool has been celebrating the title of Capital of Culture in 2008 and our Journalism students have been well placed to report the many exciting developments leading up to this important event. We also had a team of students covering the World Firefighter Games in Liverpool over the summer, producing daily bulletins of the exciting events as they happened.
