Greater China Business Awards

The Faculty of Business and Law recently reached the finals of the 2010 Greater China Business Awards for the North West.

The Awards were organised by the Northwest Regional Development Agency and UK Trade and Investment North West in order to recognise companies and organisations that have made a significant contribution to developing business or network links with Greater China.

By adopting the principle of 'Guanxi', that is, developing sustainable relations based on good and respected personal relations rather than formal structures, the Faculty has greatly strengthened its links with China, and its shortlisting at the Awards bears testament to this.

The Faculty is committed to advancing professional capacity and skills through joint and exchange programmes, and research activities, with university officials and industry groups such as the University of International Business and Economics (Beijing), EU-China Information Society, Mercedes-Benz (Shanghai Group), the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC), and Shanghai and Northwest universities.

Recent activities that the Faculty has been involved in include:

-     Hosting a summer school for postgraduate students from Shanghai University
-     Receiving a Chinese postgraduate student nominated by Shanghai University, supported by a scholarship under the Hodgson programme
-     The launch of a joint Master's programme to train Chinese schoolteachers to teach the English language
-     Delivering training workshops jointly with CIETAC in both Beijing and Xi'an

Professor James Kirkbride, Dean of Faculty of Business and Law, and Dr Bob McClelland, Reader in Education Technology at the Faculty, have also been awarded Adjunct Professorships by Shanghai University.

Professor Kirkbride said:

"The recognition of the development work of the Faculty is pleasing. It is one of our aims to ensure that we enable staff and students to engage in understanding international and comparative influences on professional practice. The link with Shanghai, in particular, builds upon the traditions of the city of Liverpool and enables the understanding between these two influential cities to grow."
